Hong Kong's famous harbor on an
usual winter day. The boat in the
image
is one of many water ferries between Kowloon, Hong Kong (attached to
mainland China) and Hong Kong Island,
Hong Kong, which is shown in the
image.
A typical day for the busy port
of Hong Kong:
lots of commercial traffic. Christmas means big business in Hong
Kong. View of the same Hong Kong Island (in image 1) at night. Hong Kong's six million plus
inhabitants live on a tiny sliver of
dredged and reclaimed land between the mountains and the harbor, which
is smart urban planning, because there is more space for ...
Parks! While Hong Kong
is heavily populated,
the government has also set aside many hectares of green space for
recreation and conservation purposes. There are many hiking
trails linking urban Hong Kong centers to "rural" Hong Kong. This
was a refreshing hike that started at the Fanling Station, shown below
on the blue line.
Hong Kong's MTR subway is one
of the best in the world: convenient,
spotless,
trilingual (Cantonese, English, and Mandarin), and efficient. Map
lights up for station destination, transfer lines, and which side the
door opens.
Trains are efficient with most trains, except the ones to the other
islands, running every 2-3 minutes and punctual.
Hong Kong? Yep, that's me on
Lamma
Island, popular seafood destination and an escape from the noise of the
city. Vehicles are not allow on this island. Lamma, one of
Hong Kong's larger islands, has
great rocky beaches, paths that lead to nowhere, abandoned villages,
and caves. A great place to explore "green" Hong Kong.
Hong Kong's national pastime:
horse racing. Although land is a
preminum in Hong Kong, when it comes to horse racing, as you can see,
land is not an issue.
Taipei, Taiwan Chiang Kai-shek's
Memorial in
Taipei, Taiwan. It is huge covering many acres of the city center. Hungry? Party
goers and
night owls can get a delicious bowl of
soup or noodle with your choice of fresh vegetables and seafood on the
spot.
Guangdong Province, China A new recycling
campaign
in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou as
seen on the campus of Guangzhou University. I like their amusing
and creative use of English. My favorite landscape
design in
a national park near Guangzhou, China.
A glimpse of Chinese culture
through the contents of a vending
machine. First and second rows: nuts, dried fruits,
candy, gum, dried meat products, and other dried fruits (palate
cleansers).
Third row and fourth: chinese style crisps, chips and instant noodles.
Fifth row: juice and tea
boxes.
